What is a Spot Face Tool?
A spot face tool, also known as a spot facing tool, is a cutting tool used to create a flat and even surface, known as a spot face, on a workpiece. The spot face is typically a small, shallow recessed area that serves as a mounting surface for various applications, such as attaching components or ensuring proper alignment. Spot face tools are especially helpful in permanently-installed sensor installation, to ensure there is a flat, smooth surface for the mounted sensor.
The spot face tool is designed to remove material from the workpiece, typically using a rotary cutting action. It consists of a cutting head or bit that is securely attached to a drill. The cutting head may have multiple flutes or cutting edges, depending on the specific tool design. For sensor installations, CTC recommends using a right-angle drill in combination with a spot face tool.
It is important to select the appropriate spot face tool based on factors such as the material being worked on, the desired spot face diameter and depth, and the cutting tool's compatibility with the machine.
CTC offers a wide variety of spot face tools available in our MH117 Series Accelerometer Installation Tool Kits. CTC's MH117 Series tool kits come with a combination four-fluted spot face and drill bit assembly that allows you to drill and spot face your mounting location at the same time. These kits come in a variety of options for spot face end mill diameter, ranging from 0.625 in. (15.9 mm) to 1.25 in. (31.75 mm). They are also available in high-speed steel and carbide-tipped end mill options.
